Moving House Checklist – Quick Guide to Stress Free Removals

Have you just bought a new home? Or have you snared that new job or received that big promotion that requires you to relocate?

Moving house can be a very stressful experience if you aren’t prepared for it. Remember that you are moving from your current comfort zone (which is not only limited to your immediate abode, but the environment that you and your loved ones have become used to) to a place that may be completely different. It is, therefore very important that you prepare way ahead of the day. The best way is to ask for the assistance of RexGo, the professional team of Sydney removalists.

Prior to your move and before our team of removalists come with our moving vans to help you and your family transfer, it’s important for you to prepare a detailed checklist.
Why? You sure don’t want to miss some important things that you could leave behind or those unwanted things that can be given away.

Therefore, it helps to have a checklist when you are moving because your checklist would contain all the things you need to do to preserve you sanity and make your moving day as painless as possible.

General Tips to Remember

  • Say your “goodbyes” early
If you have kids at school, make sure to give the school ample notice that you are moving so that they can prepare the necessary documents they will need for their new school. Also advise the power, water, and gas utilities companies, the bank and credit card companies, the electoral board, and other agencies in the area that deal with or registered with in your current residence about your transfer as well as the forwarding address of your soon-to-be new home. Do not forget to cancel (or advise of your new address, as applicable) any subscriptions. Doing this early enough will save both parties from any possible misunderstanding.

  • Say your “hellos” early, too
On the flipside, make sure to give ample notice to the companies and agencies that you will be dealing with where you will be transferring. If your bank has a branch in your new area, a quick call to advise them will do wonders in making sure that your financial issues are in order. The school that your children will be moving to will also need to be advised early enough so that they will be able to attend school as soon as you get settled.

The same goes for other companies like the power, gas, and water utilities companies, so you can arrive to a well-lit home with gas for cooking and water to wash up with after a day of moving. If you want to make sure that you don’t miss the latest issue of your favourite magazine, let them know about your pending transfer as well.

  • Pack early
At least a week before you actually move, make sure that all the things you want to bring with you are ready to be moved. Do not put this off until the last minute when the Sydney removalists come or you will end up bringing the things that were not worth bringing to your new home at all. Set aside the clothes that you and your family will be wearing for a week, and put these all in one big box when you are done using them to bring with you on the day that you move.

As soon as possible, once you know you are moving

Book RexGo your professional Sydney removals company

You should always take care in choosing your moving company. Do not be “blinded” simply by the offer that a particular company makes. You might be getting a really lousy service if you just choose the cheapest price available, and watch for hidden costs particularly in the area of insurance.

As soon as you know you are moving, book in with RexGo, your friendly Sydney removals team. This is the first step – if you give your removalist team a lot of notice, you can be sure to choose your preferred day to move house and we can prepare to serve you better.

And if possible, arrange some time off work

4-6 weeks before the move

Your next consideration is your moving checklist. Preparation is critical when you’re moving and this checklist will help you prepare for that big moving day.

  • Redirect your mail & change your address through mail redirection – sign up for this service at the post office and save yourself some fuss.
  • Throw out as much junk as possible through charity bins or garage sales
  • Use the food in your freezer and cupboards so that you are not hoarding too much unnecessary weight
  • Start cleaning out cupboards and packing up things you will not need
  • Check your insurance policy to check whether it covers your move
  • Make a list of all the you will require for the moving day, so that you do not pack anything essential
  • Collect packing boxes and materials from supermarkets or organise to buy or hire packing cartons from RexGo
  • Contact your landlord/real estate agent if you are renting to confirm the date you will be leaving the property. Also arrange a refund of your bond upon final inspection

A couple of weeks before the move

  • Confirm arrangements with RexGo to ensure the move is on track to take place as planned
  • Arrange for the disconnection and reconnection of electricity, telephone & internet provider – allowing at least 5 working days to do this
  • Cancel newspaper deliveries, cleaning & gardening and any other local services
  • If renting, arrange for carpet cleaners to come in, most conveniently, after you have moved house
  • Defrost and clean your fridge and freezer the day before you move to safely move your fridge which has a sensitive heating/cooling element
  • Start packing – the more you do before the day, the less stressful the whole experience. Label boxes clearly, especially those which are heavy or fragile.
  • Arrange for new locks to be fitted to the new house

The day of the move

  • Make or confirm key collection arrangements
  • Pack a box with kitchen essentials for the move day such as a kettle, cutlery, mugs, tea, coffee and snacks
  • Do a final check of all storage areas in your house to ensure nothing is left behind
  • Check off all furniture and cartons against your inventory as they go into the van or truck
  • Turn off electricity at the main switch – this is very important for this service to be switched off
  • Ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked as you leave your old house
  • Keep your valuables and important papers with you at all times
  • Check every nook and cranny to make sure you don’t leave anything behind.
  • Disconnect the washing machine and dishwasher and allow to drain if necessary.
  • Unpack bedding and make up beds as soon as possible – this is the most important item, especially at the end of an exhausting day

With this itemised moving checklist and early planning, you can be sure that your move will be as successful as it can possibly be. The best part of keeping a checklist is you can maintain a good focus on the most important things you need to bring during your move and your stress level will be much easier to manage.
